*To make your
eye shadow last, dust your lids with loose face powder first. Leaving a bit of excess
powder under your eyes until you've finished your shadow application also makes it easier
to brush off those foundation-destroying color flakes that always seem to land there.*
*Shimmery eye shadow will grab onto even the
slightest wrinkle and magnify it to frightening proportions - matte formulas and shadows
with just a hint of shimmer are much more flattering for most women. A bit shine to your
shadow can look great, but a really glossy or frosted formula is bad news for those of
us who are beyond checking the "age 16-24" box.*

*Allow your
eye cream a few minutes to absorb before beginning your makeup application - the shadow
will clump up on your lids if they're damp.*
*The skin around
your eyes is very delicate. When applying eyeliner, try not to tug hard on your lids,
either with your finger or with the liner itself - it should glide smoothly, not
pull. If your eyeliner seems to be too hard and is skipping or dragging, try warming the
tip between your fingers to soften it up.*
*Blend a dot of concealer that is slightly
lighter in color than your foundation at the inner corner of eyes for
a wide eyed, more youthful look.*
*Fight the urge to pump your
mascara wand into the bottle - it will cause the mascara
to dry up.*
*Curling your lashes will open up your
eyes. Remember that curling always comes before mascara (otherwise the curler will stick
to your lashes and pull them), and be careful - catching your lid in an eyelash curler
really hurts!*
*Eye shadow
can make close set eyes seem further apart. Try using a lighter color on the inner half
and a darker shade from the middle of your lid to the outer corner, and don't forget to
blend ;)*
*To make wide set eyes appear closer
together, apply a deeper shade of shadow from the inner corner to the middle of your lid
and a lighter color on the outer half of your eye.*
*Small eyes look best with shadow colors
that aren't too dark - a deep shade may draw attention to your eyes but it will also make
them appear even smaller. Sticking with lighter colors will bring your eyes out and give
them the illusion of being larger.*
*To bring out deep set eyes, use a light
color over your entire lid, and a deeper shade in the crease.*
Matching your eye shadow to your eye color
isn't the key to making your eyes "pop"... it will actually make them
appear washed out. If you get lost trying to figure out which
shadow shade will bring out your eyes, here are a few suggestions...
Brown Eyes: Plums,
Charcoal Grays, Deep Muted Greens
Blue Eyes: Soft Grays, Purples
and Violets
Green Eyes: Soft Plums, Grays and Browns
Neutral colored eye shadows
like taupes, beiges, etc will work with any eye color. |
*Contrary to the
old myth, plucking or waxing your eyebrows will not make the hair grow in thicker -
they'll actually thin out over time, so tread lightly if you tend to frequently
overpluck/wax, or you could be left with permanent bare spots.*
*Messy or overgrown eyebrows
throw off even the best makeup application. If you'd rather deal with them yourself but
have no idea where to start, having them done once professionally will give you a line to
follow and make keeping them in check a breeze!*
*Try tweezing after a warm bath
or shower - it's less painful.*
*If you use a magnifying mirror (or lean in
very closely to a regular one) while tweezing, step back and check your work periodically.
It can be difficult to judge the overall picture while you are zeroing in on a small area
- you may end up taking off way more than you planned.*
